LEICESTER have kicked off their National Development League team building with the signing of popular Devon-based racer Ben Trigger.
The 18-year-old will be going into his second spell with the club, having previously ridden for the Lion Cubs back in 2021 when he was competing in the league for the first time.
During that year he became a big crowd favourite at Beaumont Park and was named Most Improved Rider at the end of season awards.
Since then, Trigger has ridden for his local club Plymouth, Mildenhall and Middlesbrough at NDL level, finishing top of the Tigers’ averages this year with a final figure of 8.71 including a maximum in their last match of the season against Edinburgh.
He has also gained higher-level experience with Plymouth and Redcar in the Championship.
Trigger said: “History is re-writing itself, we’re looping back around and it’s great to be going back to where we first started out.
“I remember getting my first National League heat win at Leicester and the crowd went insane, I still watch the video of that race now and again!
“The fans were really good during my first year there, and I’m looking forward to proving why I’m going back, and hopefully seal the deal of winning their hearts again.
“I’ve learnt a lot about bike set-ups over the years and I’ve spent many a day at Leicester either racing or practising. It’s one of those where you can use set-ups to get faster, and I have more experience now than when I first started out.
“I know I’m going to be up at the top of the Leicester team, but I’ve grown up with most of the riders through the British Youth system, and if I can pass on knowledge then I will.
“I’ve always done that, and even in my first year at Leicester when I was at reserve I was still trying to help out. Now I’ve got a few years under my belt I can pass things on to those who are just coming in at reserve.”
Trigger is the first confirmed signing for the Lion Cubs’ title NDL defence, with more news to follow this week.
